Set high in the Andes Mountains, the lost Incan city of Machu Picchu is the best-known and most spectacular archaeological site on the continent. Despite the crowds of tourists between June and September, it still retains an air of grandeur and mystery. Built in the 15th century and abandoned only 100 years later, it is known for its sophisticated dry-stone walls that fuse huge blocks without the use of mortar, and its intriguing buildings that seem to have been constructed according to astronomical alignments. It's exact former use remains a mystery but the panoramic views and awe-inspiring setting continue to draw crowds of tourists.
